Happy 3rd birthday to our sweet #GracieLou!! Here’s an ode to her Resting Grouch Face. 😂

We adopted Gracie about 9 months after I lost my soul dog. She was only 7-weeks old, and was listed as a “lab mix” at the rescue. We assumed she’d have some of the usual rescue breeds mixed in, so we got her DNA tested. Turns out, she doesn’t have a speck of lab in her (though everyone assumes she’s a lab!).

That’s how we learned about Maremma Sheepdogs (she’s 50%), a Livestock Guardian Dog breed! And she has allllll the personality traits of one. They’re basically just smaller Great Pyrs (peep that demanding Pyr Paw on one of the slides).

Problem though - they bark A LOT when outside. Especially at night. This was not ideal when we lived in a suburban neighborhood. So now we joke that we bought our dog a farm.😂😜

So, thanks Gracie Louise for motivating us to move to the country and for protecting our flocks and herds so fiercely! We definitely know she has keep predators away from our property, and we know God put her in our lives before we ever knew that we needed her!

She’s such a Daddy’s Girl and is obsessed with Ian (also in this slide deck). I’m glad he finally has a soul dog too!😍🥰

One year ago today, we saw once again that the Lord was capable of so much more than we could have ever imagined.

As soon as our agent left the property after our showing, Ian and I walked around the property and prayed the prayer of Jabez from 1 Chronicles 4:10.

““Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.”

The Lord’s hand has been on this property since that day, and I am just in awe of how far we have come. So, so grateful to God. 🥹🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Carrying water into the goat pen today, I left the gate open for a second too long and had to corral these goobers out of the chicken coop so they didn’t get into the chicken feed! 🫠🤦🏻‍♀️

They will do anything they can to beeline for the chicken feed if given the opportunity. Unfortunately, it’s SUPER deadly for goats. The high starch feed messes with the pH levels in their rumen and can kill them, and sadly a farmer I follow just lost his goat to it this week. 😭💔🙏🏼

Thankfully, George and Lucy weren’t in there long enough to be a problem today and we all made it out in one piece!

Ahhhhhh giant goose egg!!!!!🥚😍🎉

Geese typically only lay in the Spring/Summer and not often. I expected to see eggs in *maybe* March, but wouldn’t have been surprised if it was later. And yet, on Feb 18th we got our first goose egg!!!!😍🎉🙌🏼

Of course they laid it right under the camera so I can’t see who did it, but I’ll definitely be watching more closely in the coming weeks!

Sadly, we don’t have a boy goose, so these aren’t fertilized, so we won’t be hatching any. But now I want one so we can. 😂

Our geese are some of the most amusing animals on the farm, and now they even demand snuggles and to be picked up and placed in the coop at night instead of having to be chased in, but this makes me even more obsessed with them!!!!

20 chicks have hatched. 4 eggs remained, I candled them today and one was definitely bad, 3 were questionable. I went ahead and left those 3 in the incubator and will watch for another day or two, but I don’t have high hopes! That’s okay, 83% success for my first round isn’t bad!

Tomorrow is lockdown day for the brooder, which means chicks could hatch anytime this weekend, but expecting them Monday-ish!!!!

That means we had to make sure the brooder was ready to go! We are changing things up a little this season, and will probably make more tweaks along the way. Also going to add a second brooder setup in a tote in a couple weeks because they will quickly outgrow this setup, and I don’t want them overcrowded.

Pray for more hens than roosters, y’all!!!!💕💕💕

The Bachelors are finally flying the coop!! 🖤🖤🖤

We haven’t tried hard at all to sell the bachelors because it’s been winter and no one wanted to add to their flock during snowstorms. But for our second False Spring, I finally put them online and sold them super fast! 🙌🏼

One was delivered today, one will be delivered Friday, and Wahoo Walter will remain here with us!

Walter is going to move up to the OGs, and Gomez and Morticia will move to the Bachelor Pad temporarily til we build our newest coop arriving later this week! Gomez just isn’t dominant enough to survive the bullies up there! 😭 Praying Walter is, and I’ll be monitoring it super closely to be sure. Those girls are jerks lol.

So Friday, we will be cleaning out the bachelor pad and adding a nesting box for Morticia and making the swaps! Can’t wait!!!! 🥰🙌🏼🖤🖤

Our first #AyamCemani egg on the farm!! I had no idea Morticia would start laying this early, everything I’ve read says they could start anywhere from 5-8 months, or even as late as 10-12 months. They are not prolific layers (another reason the breed is so expensive!). Morticia is only 5 months and 2 days old!

So when I saw her this morning clearly displaying nesting behavior, I let her out so she could get to the nesting boxes and she immediately hopped in. Within an hour we had the tiniest long egg and Morticia was singing her egg song!
